“Spider, SSPPYYDER!”  Self-isolation had not begun well.  Amy’s scream woke the house at 1:00 in the morning.  Daddy, of course, was sent to investigate this giant arachnid attack only to discover an object so small that whether it was a spider, a piece of fluff or just a speck of dirt was indeterminable.

There are many suggestions on how to cope with self-isolation, most of these seem to involve copious amounts of alcohol or chocolate (or both). Emily and I decided to start with a regimented schedule:

As you will see, it all started so well.  We were enthused, we were prepared, we were so naive.  I sat with Joseph for our maths session and asked him to differentiate x²+6x+8.  Apparently, this isn’t on the current year one maths syllabus.  Oh well, we might be up to algebra by the time the schools reopen.

Like any parent, we factored in things that both Emily and I would enjoy.  We decided that jigsaw puzzles were a good, family activity and, luckily, I had been bought 3 for Christmas.  This was the easiest of the 3 I received!

Amy at least seemed happy with her puzzle!

As the days have progressed we have moved from a regimented structure to following a more simple mantra of ‘survive’.  There are many amusing photos and videos doing the rounds but having just got through day 3, the video below is, perhaps, the most apt.

Our health continues to fluctuate.  Emily is, we think, around Day 8 and has hopefully turned a corner while I am a few days further back and have hit a dead-end (my head feels quite literally like it’s hit a brick wall).  Amy came down with a temperature and headaches overnight but remains in charge.  Joseph has decided that the best solution to everything is to isolate himself from everyone in his bedroom with Harry Potter CDs.

On the plus side (for the dog at least) we haven’t run out of toilet paper!
